PM Communication Club: Common Communication and Public Speaking Barriers

COMMUNICATION FOR SUCCESS!

Have you been looking for ways to improve communication skills? As a project manager, possessing effective communication skills is the key to success in your career. CPMPAC is pleased to announce the Project Management Communication Program coming this MAY. The program will be delivered in a workshop format. Each workshop aims to provide an interactive session allowing participants to practice, share and advance their communication skills. Participants are more than welcome to share their experiences, real case scenarios and challenges with other participants.

PROGRAM FOCUS

Participating in this event, you will learn the tips and tricks on:

  • How to facilitate a project meeting effectively
  • How to deal with common communication barriers
  • How to communicate with multiple stakeholders with conflicts in priority
  • How to persuade team members to buy in your ideas and build rapport with management

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

One 2-hour workshop will be delivered monthly, starting May 28th, 2011. Each workshop exercise will be led by a facilitator. Each workshop accepts registrations up to 20 core participants allowing reasonable time for each core participant to take part in the in-class exercise. Limited seats will be reserved for observers to sit in the workshop. Workshop participants and observers are entitled to 2 PDUs after completing a 2-hour session. A theme and learning objectives will be pre-determined by the workshop facilitator.

COMMUNICATION PROGRAM MEMBERSIP

We encourage a participant to register every workshop module in order to become a communication program member. The membership will allow a participant to gain an integrated knowledge targeting on project management communications. The membership is the privilege to access all current communication club program workshops; it also applies your commitment to attend all the workshops. The theme of each workshop module is tentatively determined as the following. The theme is subject to change depending on the facilitators decision.


Module 1 Project Management Communication 101
Date: Saturday, 28 May 2011, 2:00-5:00 pm

Location: Scarborough Civic Centre, Council Chambers room,

  • The key elements to organize/chair a meeting effectively
  • How to organize a successful project kick-off meeting?

Module 2 - Common Communication and Public Speaking Barriers
Date: Saturday June 18th, 2011, 1:15-5:00 pm

Locations: Committee room #1, North York Civic Center, Toronto
PDU: 3 PDUs, Expected 35
CPMP Member: Free
Non-CPMP Member: $10 (Waive if join CPMP onsite; CPMP Membership fee is $20/year)
Parking: Meter parking along with the surrounding streets, and indoor parking under the center ($5 flat fee). Free parking in residential area on east of Yonge (5 minutes walk through the subway tunnel

Alfredo Lopez

Facilitator: Alfredo Lopez, CPMP-member, DTM-Toastmaster

Alfredo is an Accountant, and was a Professor at the University of Mexico. He joined Manulife Financial Toastmasters in January 2002; he has served as the Treasurer, VP Education and Club-President. Outside his club, Alfredo was Division Governor. He was facilitator and Organizer in Training, Contests and Workshops for Toastmasters' clubs. He is very active and enthusiastic and he believes that: "Success in life is to make others succeed"

  • Understand what the common barriers are
  • How to overcome the barriers
  • How to improve public speaking skills

Module 3 - Facilitating toward Success
Date: Saturday, July 23rd, 2011, 2:00-5:00 pm

Locations: Committee room #2, Scarborough Civic Centre, Toronto
PDU: 3 PDUs, Expected 35
CPMP Member: Free
Non-CPMP Member: $10 (Waive if join CPMP onsite; CPMP Membership fee is $20/year)

Facilitator: Cynthia Yeh, MBA, PMP, CPMP Member

Cynthia is a PMI-certified Project Management Professional (PMP) who works for Mount Sinai Hospital as Senior Project Manager. In this role, she is accountable for project plan, status report creation and information dissemination. She had contributed to a successful submission of multi-million health care projects funded by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care.

Workshop Overview and Agenda:

This workshop is designed to provide the participants with an opportunity to learn and practice facilitation skills. Participants will gain the knowledge of how to prepare, conduct a facilitation session and what tools are available to a facilitator. Workshop agenda as the following:

  • Welcome and Overview
  • Ice Breaker Exercise
  • Ground Rules Setting
  • Definition of Facilitation (Facilitator vs. Chairing a Meeting)
  • Facilitator's Role
  • Leading a Facilitation Session

  • Case Scenarios Exercise

The third module has successfully finished, participants could claim PDUs using "PDU claim form".


Module 4 - Effective Communication for Project Managers with Emphasize on Negotiation and Persuasion
Date: Sunday, October 16rd, 2011, 1:30-5:00 pm

Locations: Committee room #2, North York Civic Centre, Toronto
PDU: 3 PDUs,
CPMP Member: Free
Non-CPMP Member: $10 (Waive if join CPMP onsite; CPMP Membership fee is $20/year)

Facilitator: Vijay Chander, Senior Program Manager at Rogers Communication Inc.

Vijay Chanderis a Certified Project Management Professional and leader with 9+ years of experience in program/project management, software implementation, and process re-engineering. Extensive experience in full lifecycle project management, quality assurance, business continuity, performance management. He has worked over 12 years in Telecommunication industry. Prior to Telecommunications, Vijay has also worked for Metro Toronto Zoo (not behind the cages) as an Assistant Curator on Butterfly conservation project, Tropical Rain Forests of the Philippines and India on various Conservation projects involving habitat development, wildlife management, community development and Community forestry projects.

Workshop Overview and Agenda:

This workshop is designed to provide the participants with an opportunity to learn and practice project management communication skills, particularly in negotiation and persuasion. Participants will gain the knowledge of how to negotiate and persuade project team members and stakeholders to buy in your ideas. Workshop agenda as the following:

  • 3:45PM: Group activities, case analysis
  • 5:00PM: Workshop Closes

Module 5 - How to Communicate Effectively with Executive Management
Date: Saturday, November 19rd, 2011, 1:30-5:00 pm

Locations: Committee room #2, North York Civic Centre, Toronto
PDU: 3 PDUs,
CPMP Member: Free
Non-CPMP Member: $10 (Waive if join CPMP onsite; CPMP Membership fee is $20/year)

Facilitator: Mr. Daju Gu, Managing Partner of the First North Consulting.

Mr. Daju Gu has over 20 years experience in project management and has successfully led many large initiatives in banking, capital markets, insurance and IT. During the past 2 decades, Daju has served various roles in project management including project manager, program manager/director and executive advisor.

Daju is the managing partner of the First North Consulting and is currently engaged as the program director for the Fixed Income CCP Program sponsored by TMX Group.

Workshop Overview and Agenda:

This workshop is designed to provide the participants with an opportunity to learn and practice project management communication skills, particularly in communicating and establishing rapport with executives. The workshop agenda as the following:

    • Case 3: Working with group executives(both internal and external)

The fifth module has successfully finished, participants could claim PDUs using "PDU claim form".

Module 6 . Coaching and team building through effective communication

  • What are effective coaching principles
  • How to build a high-efficiency team through effective communication
